Investigations over the last decade has revealed the sad and bad truth about clergy sexual abuse within the Catholic Church and other religious organizations. It is now very much obvious that children were frequently and pervasively sexually abused by the clergymen. It is also apparent that the Catholic Church was very much aware of this issue but it did almost nothing to stop it. Instead, the church hierarchy covered it.
Most victims were boys under 14, and the abuse was not a one-time thing.
Sexual abuse by a clergyman against young church members has traumatizing prolonged effects. Victims of clergy sexual abuse suffer from emotional trauma or Post Traumatic Disorder (PTSD) for the rest of their lives. Recently, the increased public attention and awareness haS led to notable legal changes that are designed to provide victims the ability to hold their abusers accountable for their disgusting actions.
